It seems that George Lucas not only knows how to make noteworthy movies, he also knows how to pick the right marketing partners. Choosing to team with LEGO to create the Indiana Jones LEGO theme was a stroke of genius, and has produced some of the most striking LEGO sets to date.

The first sets were announced in 2007 and appeared in early 2008 to build excitement for the upcoming fourth movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The initial sets, however, were based on the two of the first three movies in the franchise, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Later in 2008 LEGO sets were introduced to coincide with the release of the fourth movie.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was not represented until 2009 when two sets were released, including the famous mine cart chase in the underground Temple which is 37" (94cm) long.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is the well known first movie in the series, set in 1936 and released in 1981. Indiana Jones goes on a quest to locate the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis find it. Five sets were based upon this film.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

  • The Lost Tomb (7621) with 277 pieces and 3 minifigs
  • Race for the Stolen Treasure (7622) with 272 pieces and 4 minifigs
  • Temple Escape (7623) with 552 pieces and 6 minifigs
  • Fight on the Flying Wing (7683) with 376 pieces and 4 minifigs
  • Ambush in Cairo (7195) with 79 pieces and 4 minifigs

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was the second movie released in 1984, although it was set a year before the first movie in 1935. Jones (Harrison Ford) must rescue kidnapped children in India and save the sacred Sankara Stones with the help of Willie Scott and the twelve year old Short Round. There were two sets released in 2009 based on this movie.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

  • Shanghai Chase (7682) with 244 pieces 5 minifigs
  • The Temple of Doom (7199) with 654 pieces and 6 minifigs

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was believed to be the last movie in the franchise, and was for 19 years. Indiana's new adventure involves finding the Holy Grail with the help of his estranged father Henry (Sean Connery), and even includes the beginning scene where Indiana is just thirteen years old. Three sets were produced for the movie.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

  • Motorcycle Chase (7620) with 79 pieces and 3 minifigs
  • Venice Canal Chase (7197) with 420 pieces and 4 minifigs
  • Fighter Plane Attack (7198) with 339 pieces and 3 minifigs

The supposed final film came nineteen years later in 2008, with by far the largest budget of $185 million. The film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull featured a much older Indiana Jones who is thrust back into adventure after living a quiet life of teaching. The enemy this time is the Soviets Union who is looking for the crystal skull, an artifact from another world. There were seven sets for this film, the most of any of the films.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

  • Jungle Duel (7624) with 90 pieces and 3 minifigs
  • River Chase (7625) with 234 pieces and 4 minifigs
  • Jungle Cutter (7626) with 511 pieces 4 minifigs
  • Temple of the Crystal Skull (7627) with 929 pieces 10 minifigs
  • Peril in Peru (7628) with 625 pieces with 6 minifigs
  • Jungle Cruiser (20004) with 83 pieces and 1 minifig (Brickmaster subscription only)
  • Chauchilla Cemetery Battle (7196) with 189 pieces and 5 minifigs

Probably the most sought after of all the seventeen Indian Jones LEGO sets is the Temple of the Crystal Skull (7627). Not only is it the largest of the sets, but it features a full 10 minifigures, four of which are skeletons. The set features collapsing staircases, hidden rooms, spears that can be fired, and a host of other traps to complete the feel of the scene. Minifigures from the set include Indiana Jones, Mutt Williams, Irina Spalko, two Ughs Warariors, Russian Guard, Armored Skeleton and three Akator Skeletons.

Although there is no verification at this moment, there is speculation that a fifth Indiana Jones movie will be made in the next few years. With the age of Harrison Ford, most people believe that Shia LaBeouf from Transformers, who played Mutt Williams, will take over the main role. If additional movies are released, it is a good bet that more Indiana Jones LEGO sets will be released along with them, and that their popularity will only increase.
